What is Modern jazz?

Lyrical Jazz is a dynamic amalgamation of ballet and contemporary dance. This Jazz style displays the art and discipline of ballet and the natural pace of a modern dance style.

IMPORTANT:  You must not wear any body lotions, body creams or any cosmetics solutions that could potentially make the floor slippery as it could be transferred to the floor by sweat.

STRUCTURE:

This is an adult dance course and involves the study of a precise syllabus that is mainly studied and designed for this style of dance.

Method

Matt Mattox is a legend. Combining his ballet expertise with Jack Cole’s distinguished style has resulted in a visibly powerful kind of Jazz. The class combines flamenco, modern and tap, and influences from his ballet background. Reinforced by his philosophy that all dance is a form of expression and inspiration, it is a freestyle form of dance, giving the artist the pleasure and freedom to express their individuality.

Mattox’s techniques are potent and have been integrated into Jazz dance techniques: especially the concepts of isolation and driving rhythm.

What you will do

All Lyrical Jazz classes include a warm-up, floor work, centre, diagonals, jumps and choreography.

• Developing co-ordination of arms/feet/head

• Learning essential combinations of steps

• Performing a selection of short fundamental choreographies from steps learnt - centre and floor exercises and stretches

• Understanding posture and developing an awareness of your body in space

• Learning to combine routines

• Group work, duos and solos

• Introduction to turns, curves, tilts, spirals, and release motions.

What to wear
Wear comfortable, form-fitting dancewear such as leggings, dance shorts, or fitted tops. This allows for freedom of movement and helps the instructor observe your body alignment. Socks or jazz shoes are perfect for this class.

I love the time I spend at the school, the teachers - Angelo and Cindy - are very professional. The classes are never boring, besides the exercises, we also prepare shows at any time of the year. This is quite unusual but just exactly what I was looking for! Great school!

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

“ECD gave me so much: a dancer’s vocabulary, working knowledge of steps that actually come up in auditions and most of all a passion for self-expression through movements.”
